Growing Home: The Wild Origins of Domestic Houseplants
July 6 – October 20, 2024
Have you ever wondered where that philodendron in the corner of your living room came from? What a spider plant looks like growing in the wild? This is the inspiration behind this summer’s exhibit, Growing Home: The Wild Origins of Domestic Houseplants. It’s no wonder we bring plants inside.
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that Americans spend up to 90% of their lives indoors. Beyond giving us the connection to nature we crave, houseplants filter pollutants from the air, raise the humidity of indoor spaces, and just plain make us feel good! Only 20 minutes around plants is shown to improve mental health.
For Growing Home: The Wild Origins of Domestic Houseplants, the tropical exhibition area is transformed into an everyday home overtaken by houseplants gone wild! You will recognize different spaces in the conservatory as different rooms of a house, complete with furniture, appliances, and accessories. A wide variety of houseplants are arranged creatively among the rooms with beauty, surprise, and even a little humor. Thanks to our staff, most of the furniture and appliances in the displays were free – donated from their basement storage stashes or picked up from the curb on trash day.
Throughout the exhibit you will learn the history of houseplants, why we bring plants inside, fun facts, interesting botanical stories, houseplant trends
through the years, and more!
On your way out, be sure to stop by the Garden Gate Gift Store to shop a wide variety of unique houseplant-themed
books, planters, accessories, and you guessed it … houseplants!
