My cousin, Ryland is 23 years old and has battled cancer since the age of 12.
After a chest x-ray it was discovered that there was a mass encompassing Ryland's heart near his esophagus and it was inoperable.
With further testing a bone marrow aspirate was performed and Leukemia was discovered on February 14, 2002. He was diagnosed with T-Cell ALL, the rarest of ALL Leukemia. Eight months of chemo was not enough and he required a bone marrow transplant in order to survive. He was in remission for two years before the cancer came back. At this point they told him he would die and a risky second transplant was his only chance. He survived. In 2007 he needed a hip transplant. In December 2010 the cancer came back and his testicle was removed. The cancer later spread to his sinus cavity, near his eye and brain. The cancer spread from there to his shoulder, knee, and elbow and his other testicle was removed. Today, Ryland has been told that he will require chemo every month for the rest of his life to keep his cancer at bay. In between his relapses Ryland struggled emotionally and fell into anorexia and has many other medical issues throughout the last ten years. Ryland has been through more than any human being should endure, all the while being the most positive, kindest, most special person I know.
