McHenry County Veterans Stand Down will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 22 at the VFW Post 5040, 240 N. Throop St., Woodstock.
The Stand Down is being held to provide homeless and at-risk veterans a warm meal, coats, blankets, health screenings, VA and Social Security benefits counseling and referrals to a variety of other services.
It is a community-wide effort involving a number of agencies that serve the homeless.
The event is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and is being hosted by TLS Veterans, Veterans Assistance Commission of McHenry County, McHenry County Housing Authority and Veterans and Family Resources. A critical focus is to assess homeless veterans for barriers to employment because employment is an important component of ending homelessness. Although the Stand Down targets homeless veterans, any veteran or any person in need in the county can attend. However, only veterans deemed to be homeless or at imminent risk of losing their housing will be eligible for meals and supplies purchased with DOL funds.
Some services will be available only to veterans.
